New Year’s Re”sew”lutions

New Year

Happy New Year!

I know what you’re thinking—it’s way too early in the year to start with the sewing puns, pace yourself—but I just couldn’t help myself. Anyway, with the new year upon us it’s time to set those yearly goals and ambitions. I’m not talking about those generic intentions like eating less fried food or taking a few inches off your waistline (just use a smaller pattern 😜) I’m talking about allocating aspirations to this wonderful journey of craft we’ve all embarked on. Whether you sew, quilt, embroider, or dabble in all of them, here’s a little inspiration to help you get this year started on the right foot…get it…foot…ok I’ll stop.

1.) FINISH THAT PROJECT. You know what I’m talking about. Folding it up and shoving it in a drawer isn’t going to sew that last pant leg on, or piece together that football field sized quilt you thought wouldn’t take you 20 years to finish. Part of advancing this year is going to be finishing up last year’s projects first.

2.) Try something new. Now that your project schedule has freed up, let’s pick something a little outside your comfort zone to try next. We get it, you can make a mean pillow, but you’ve made 36 of them and it’s time expand our horizons. You have more talent than you think, so let’s flex those foot pedals and get creative.

3.) Get organized. If your fabric stash looks like the photo below, then it’s time for a little clean up. So much about sewing is the environment in which you sew. If you keep a messy environment, you’re less likely to want to work in it. Whether you have a dedicated sewing room, or just a corner of your house, transforming it from a construction zone to a sewing oasis will help you get through the dog days of the more demanding projects.

4.) Get social. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We LOVE our amazing community of sewers and quilters. Connecting and joining in on the fun is a great way to discover new techniques, project ideas, and make great friends. We will be offering lots of great clubs, classes, and events throughout the year, and they are a great way to meet new people and take your craft to the next level.

5.) Spread the love. A great goal for the year is to introduce at least one person to this wonderful craft. Do you have a relative or a friend you feel would like to give sewing a try? Maybe you have an old machine collecting cobwebs that you’re willing to give away. Someone compliment you on the wonderful scarf or sweater you made? Let them know they can do it too. The joy of sewing is far too fruitful to be kept to ourselves.

Hopefully these ideas help get you started in the right direction this new year. We have some wonderful content planned for you this year, and we’re so excited for all of 2018. As always, good luck with all your endeavors, we’re always here to help! Happy sewing, and thank you from all of Missouri Sewing Machine Company!
